A man who was shot at his home in Westville during a home invasion robbery died in hospital on Friday.

Rishi Maharaj suffered a gunshot wound to his upper body on Thursday afternoon and succumbed to his injury on Friday morning.

ALS Paramedics responded to the shooting incident on Baden Road in the Westville area, just outside Durban, at around 1.30pm.

ALS spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said when paramedics arrived on the scene, they found the SAPS and security personnel in attendance and were shown into a house.

Jamieson said a man believed to be in his fifties had been shot by intruders in his house.

“He had sustained a gunshot wound to his upper body and was in critical condition. Advanced Life Support paramedics worked to stabilise the man on the scene before rushing him to a nearby hospital for the further care that he required,” said Jamieson.

Provincial police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda confirmed that Maharaj died in hospital.

“Police in Westville are investigating cases of murder and house robbery following an incident in which a man was shot by an unknown suspect during a home invasion on Baden Road in Westville.”

Also at the scene was MobiClaw911 operations director and Ops Medic Wynand Laatz, who met a volunteer aider upon arrival and they both assisted the gunshot victim.

“It was established that the homeowner confronted three male suspects armed with handguns. One of the suspects shot the homeowner; they fled the scene without taking anything,” stated Mobi-Claw911.

Westville community members offered their condolences to the Maharaj family via the community WhatsApp group.

I was so relieved at the previous message. I’m really sorry to hear this!”

He was in critical condition and despite Advanced Life Support intervention the man went into cardiac arrest and passed away on the scene,” stated Jamieson.
