DURBAN - Residents began queuing outside the Durban City Hall early this morning to cast their votes in the 2021 local government elections.
When The Mercury arrived at the voting station around 7am about 20 people were already in the queue.
Israel Mndebele, who said he has been voting since 1994, said he arrived at the voting station at 5:30am to cast his vote.
Mndebele said he would like to vote out the corrupt government.
“I’m coming to vote for change. I’ve been in the ANC for quite a long time. We don't like this corruption that is happening in this country. People are poor, young [people] don't have jobs.
“We like change, we don't like corruption and the money that is being stolen like this,” he said.
He said he would like to see all those who are doing bad things to be held accountable by the ANC.
Another Durban resident living in the CBD, who only gave his name as Roman, said he was excited to vote and to make a difference.
“I'm here to make my mark, to make a difference. I believe we can make a change and the turn out today will actually tell us what our future is going to be like. So I’m excited to vote today,” he said.
