Durban – Members of the Specialised Tactical Accident Rescue Team (START) St Lucia team had a special Monday when they delivered a baby.

START director and spokesperson, Warren Brauns, said the last week was extremely busy for members with calls ranging from medical emergencies, motor vehicle collisions, search and rescue operational activities and snake bites, but a call out today brought a smile to their faces.

He said on Monday the team was called out for a medical emergency.

“On arrival of the medical (team), they soon realised that this was a mother who was in the final stages of the birth process,” he said.

Brauns said the baby was delivered and both mom and her bundle of joy were in a stable condition and in good health.

“START wishes mom and baby all the best and thanks to the first responders who are saving lives and making a difference in our communities,” he said.

IOL reported on one of the emergencies the teams were called out to assist with on Monday.

The report said a woman was bitten by a puff adder at a Drakensberg hotel on Sunday.

“On arrival, the patient was showing clear signs of a snake bite with a clear bite mark and swelling to the affected area,” Brauns said.

Brauns said the snake was identified and the woman was airlifted to hospital by Netcare 911.

Brauns told IOL that the woman’s condition had improved after she was stabilised by a trauma team in the ICU.
