Durban - One person died, and four others were critically injured, including a child, in a collision on the R102 in the Sunwich Port area of Port Shepstone on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast on Monday night.
Kwazulu Private Ambulance Service spokesperson Craig Botha said when emergency services arrived on the scene, they found that two vehicles had been involved in a collision.
“Paramedics quickly assessed the scene and found that a child had sustained critical injuries and a further three patients had sustained serious (injuries),” he said.
He said the patients were treated on the scene before they were transported to a hospital for further treatment.
“Sadly, one occupant sustained fatal injuries and succumbed to their injuries before emergency services arrived,” said Botha.
In a separate incident also on Monday morning, Kwazulu Private Ambulance Service responded to the R34 John Ross highway in Empangeni for reports of a collision between a truck and car.
Botha said the collision had caused the car to overturn and roll multiple times.
“When emergency services arrived, they found that two patients had sustained critical injuries, one of who had been ejected from the vehicle,” he said.
The patients were treated at the scene before being transported to a hospital for further treatment, he added.
Meanwhile, in another accident on Monday in Pietermaritzburg, Botha said a minibus taxi transporting school children left the road and crashed into a tree.
Botha said one occupant sustained serious injuries while three others had minor injuries.
“The patients were treated on scene before being transported to hospital,” he said.
