Durban - A black mamba was caught in the living room of a house in Emona near oThongathi on Tuesday afternoon after a concerned resident contacted Reaction Unit South Africa(Rusa).
Rusa spokesperson Prem Balram said the resident contacted the Tongaat Operations Centre just before 12.40pm after he noticed the snake in his living room.
Balram said reaction officers proceeded to the residence and on arrival located the snake behind a plastic crate which was being utilised as a TV stand.
“Officers identified the snake as a black mamba,” he said.
He said officers contacted professional snake catcher Samantha Cummings.
Balram said when Cummings arrived, she captured and removed the highly venomous reptile from the home.
He said the snake measured 1.5 metres.
“The snake will be handed over to a reptile park,” said Balram.
On Monday, The Mercury reported that a black mamba skin measuring almost 3 metres was found in the ceiling of a Shallcross home.
A plumber had climbed into the ceiling to replace a broken geyser when he came across the snake skin and quickly got down from the roof.
Snake rescuer Nick Evans said the mamba could not be found.
In another snake rescue last week, Evans said while trying to avoid being captured, a black mamba slithered through the walls of units at a block of flats in the Pinetown area and was eventually found hiding in a wall cavity behind a toilet.
