According to eThekwini Municipality Mayor Cyril Xaba, the City spent 100 percent of the Urban Settlements Development Grant (USDG) in the past six years and has received an unqualified audit opinion during the same period.
According to a National Treasury report, of the R7.5bn allocated to various metropolitan municipalities over the last financial year, metros around the country had spent 85 percent of the total available as of June 30, this year.
The City said in a statement the municipality had received R1,3bn from the National Treasury and was the only metro to have spent 100 percent of the grant.
The City of Tshwane spent 98.8 percent of the R948 462 funds allocated, followed by Buffalo City, which spent 94 percent of the R618 034 made available to them.
The eThekwini Municipality has also performed very well on the Infrastructure Settlements Upgrading Partnership (ISUPG); at the end of June this year, it had spent 100 percent of R 769 million.
The City of Cape Town spent 95.4 percent of the R663.272 million funds allocated, followed by the City of Johannesburg which spent 94 percent of the R667. 269 million made available to them.
Xaba said in terms of bulk purchases, the City continues to honour its financial obligations with Eskom and uMgeni-uThukela Water.
“We are pleased with the cooperation we are receiving from various stakeholders including business, civil society, and organised labour. The City will continue to engage with our stakeholders throughout the City to form strong partnerships to fast-track service delivery,” said Xaba.
