Durban - The swift response of members of the Scottburgh police resulted in the arrest of five suspects for the attempted murder of passengers in a taxi en-route to the rural area of Dududu on the South Coast on Tuesday.
Provincial police spokesperson, Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said three victims alleged that they were in a taxi at 8.30am on October 25, driving to the Dududu area when the vehicle was stopped by armed security guards.
“They complied and as soon as their taxi came to a halt, the security opened fire towards the victims,” she said.
Ngcobo said the victims managed to escape unharmed.
According to Ngcobo, police responded swiftly and arrested five suspects, aged between 34 and 41.
“Police also seized three rifles, two pistols and 130 rounds of ammunition,” she said.
All five suspects are expected to appear in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on October 27.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, police arrested three robbery suspects, aged between 24 to 36, in Richards Bay on Friday on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Ngcobo said Richards Bay police received information regarding four armed suspects who were planning to rob a local supermarket.
“Police proceeded to the said place for observation. Three suspects were spotted as they were approaching the business premises, they were stopped and searched by the police who recovered one pistol and rounds of ammunition,” she said.
She said the suspects appeared before Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court on October 24.
