London - Low levels of vitamin D - which the body makes when exposed to sunlight - might be a reason for impotence.

New research shows that men with erectile dysfunction are more likely to have vitamin D deficiency, and the more severe the problems, the lower the levels.

A study at the University of Milan measured vitamin D levels in 143 men. Vitamin D deficiency was found in 45.9 percent and only a fifth had the ideal levels.

Researchers suggest the low levels may adversely affect the endothelium, the cells that line the walls of blood vessels.

This may in turn prevent the blood vessels in the penis from widening, reducing blood flow and therefore making erections more difficult. - Daily Mail
