If, like me, you always get fabulous gifts from the man in your life you will understand the pressure to reciprocate. This is especially true when he always says he doesn't want or need anything - or worse, when you buy exorbitant gifts he never ever uses.

The men in the lifestyle office have offered some great advise which I've curated for your benefit.

Fragrance tops the list of Valentine's gifts.

Men want cologne. But here's the thing, don't try and impress him by buying the latest thing or finding something new, that you totally love. Rather snoop around his stuff and buy him what he already uses and likes.

Playing it safe doesn't hurt as this gift is usually a substantial spend and will be appreciated and used.

Armani Acqua di Gioia, 100ml, sells for about R1 600 at www.redsquare.co.za

Intention is crucial.

If you want to pamper and spoil then consider a spa voucher or a voucher to an exclusive male grooming parlour.

If you're marking a milestone a timepiece is the way to go.

Walsh by Michael Kors sells for R5 999 on www.superbalist.com

Like watches, wallets are great gifts.

Local is lekker and there are numerous brands to choose from. Be warned, a wallet can be really personal, but we like the Tsonga Leefa at R450 from www.tsonga.com

No worries if it's early days in your relationship, there are plenty of cool gadgets from Bluetooth headsets to instant cameras, speakers and headphones to keep the mood light.

The Marshall Acton Speaker sells for about R2 999 at www.takealot.com

Lasting, personalise your gift, if you want it to feel less commercial. The guys say leave the lovely dovey messages out though. They're never going to take that mug to the office. Instead, put his name on it.

A great example are personalised socks from www.netflorist.co.za at about R129. 95.
