Capetonians are always complaining about the cost of rent in the city and the struggle to make ends meet.

TikTok user @bigvicenergy369 took to the app to share how he gets by.

“People always ask how do we afford to stay in Cape Town with the rent,” he says at the start of the clip which has been viewed almost 150,000 times.

He specifically refers to what food he eats as he shows his followers what he bought, saying: “You must know how to shop.”

His food haul includes a small loaf of bread for R7.49 as well a small bag of grated cheese that cost him R8.10.

He then moves on to the pre-cooked meals which includes crumbed chicken strips for R23.28, white rice for R13.68 and veggies for R9.39.

He claims that he can get two meals out of what he bought.

“We are living nicely,” he concludes.

Hundreds of people have commented on the video captioned: “Imagine buying food for a whole household in Cyril’s Economy. I’m blessed shame.”

“Just had 2 boiled eggs and called it a day. As long as I can see Table Mountain from my window,” commented a fellow Capetonian.

Others were concerned about his diet, with one person saying: “I lived like this when I was a receptionist/student and man, I got so fat! Had to spend the money I saved on new clothes cuz nothing fit me anymore.”

“The thing is, there’s no protein in there, very little in the cheese, only carbs and fats,” wrote another.

“Not healthy food though,” said one other TikToker.
