People have been debating culinary terminology and the right way to eat certain foods for decades. The long-time argument between sweet and savoury foods has been a source of tension for many cooks and foodies on the internet for years.

Our strong opinions on food have given rise to some pretty interesting and controversial debates.

Though there are far too many food debates out there for us to provide you with a definitive list, we have rounded up some of the most controversial.

Is a breakfast sandwich still considered a breakfast sandwich if eaten for dinner?

The typical breakfast sandwich consists of cheese, eggs, and meat between two slices of bread.

The question here is: Does it stop being a breakfast sandwich if it’s eaten for dinner? Some argue that combining specific breakfast-associated ingredients as a filling makes it a breakfast food with its distinct category.

Others believe it’s just a sandwich if eaten later in the day. The timing of consumption remains a point of contention for breakfast sandwiches.

Which chicken wing is better: drum or flat?

Not all chicken wings are created equal, even among the best Buffalo wings in the country. Just as some people prefer a cake slice with a lot of frosting and others prefer an interior piece, some people like the little drums in a plate of chicken wings, and others like the flats.

Like many great debates, people took to X to debate drums versus flats. Drum supporters like the easier eating that comes with that shape, while flat supporters like the breading-to-skin-to-chicken ratio.

Should you split Oreos in half or eat them whole?

We’re prepared to open a whole can of worms on this debate: Should you split Oreos in half or eat them whole? This choice feels like it’s been around since the dawn of time - well, since the dawn of the Oreo in 1912, anyway.

Each chocolate-flavoured cookie has two parts, sandwiched together with a creamy filling. So how do you eat yours?

Are you one of those people who splits their Oreo cookie open - carefully - and scrapes off the filling with their teeth before eating each half of the cookie? Or do you just dive in with a bite of the whole cookie?

What should you put on top of your hot dog?

Hot dog toppings vary from region to region. Not only do people have strong opinions about what should be placed on a hot dog, but the placement of the various toppings also causes much debate.

Apparently, you are supposed to avoid dressing the bun. So, no condiments directly on the bun.

Now that we have that solved, what should go on top? Some favourite toppings include mustard, onions, relish and sauerkraut. But what about tomato sauce?

Does pineapple belong on pizza?

Everyone has their favourite pizza toppings. Some people won’t eat a slice without pepperoni, while others think that particular meat is too spicy. But no pizza topping has the internet quite as divided as pineapple.

Some people think it’s just fine when paired with ham, others need it on every single slice and some people think pineapple on pizza is only for weirdos who don’t understand the concept of dinner. What do you have to say?
