London - The days before Christmas saw the first childbirth in London's subway system since 1924, British newspapers reported on Saturday.
According to media reports, a woman was travelling with her sister on the Tube's Jubilee Line on December 19 when her waters broke, meaning the birth was imminent.
The two quickly exited the train at the Kingsburg station in north-west London and summoned help.
But, by the time medical personnel arrived, there was not enough time to transfer the pregnant woman to a hospital. She ended up delivering a baby girl in the office of a subway employee.
No details about the mother were released.
Although millions of people travel through the 11 lines and 270 station's of London's Tube system, there has only been one birth registered in the system, when Marie Cordery was born at the Elephant & Castle station in 1924. - Sapa-dpa
