South Africa’s leading environmental champions were celebrated last week as the Eco-Logic Awards 2024 honoured the country’s most innovative and impactful contributions to sustainability.

Held at The Avenue, Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town, the awards ceremony attracted eco-enthusiasts, business leaders, and activists united by a shared vision of a greener future.

Hosted by comedian Themba Robin, the event highlighted achievements in diverse fields, from wildlife conservation to waste innovation and water conservation.

The ceremony began with a unique “silent” joy session. Each guest wore headsets and followed along with music and meditation, creating a shared moment of calm and connection with nature. Picture: Supplied

This year’s awards saw a strong partnership with BiomimicrySA, providing the winners with a R300,000 consultation and access to the “Change Makers by Nature” programme.

Through this initiative, award recipients will learn to apply biomimicry principles to enhance sustainability, resilience, and efficiency in their projects.

“With each award, we celebrate not just individual achievements, but the collective potential to drive meaningful change,” said founder of the eco-logic awards and editor of The Enviropaedia, David Parry-Davies.

“Our partnership with BiomimicrySA supports sustainable practices that learn from nature’s wisdom to evolve in unprecedented ways.”

A key feature of the night was a massive elephant sculpture, symbolising the critical “elephant in the room,” the environmental crises that humanity faces.

“To address these challenges, we must first change our thinking,” said Parry-Davies. “We need to think Eco-Logically.”

The Eco-Logic Awards, now in their 12th year, have become South Africa’s premier environmental event, celebrating champions across 12 categories.

Winners will be showcased this month on PPL°PLANET (OpenView Channel 115) and DStv Home (Channel 176).
