There's definitely magic in the air

Think Houdini, Penn and Teller, PC Sorcar and other magicians of that ilk and now think Anja and Philippart.

A Dutch couple, Anja and Philippart, are, if we are to believe reviewers in Monte Carlo and Las Vegas, the very latest thing in celebrated illusionists. Those who have seen their act have certainly written about it in glowing terms.

The duo are Durban-bound and will be one of the main holiday attractions at the Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom this festive season, from December 1.

Expect a "daring spectacle of mind-boggling acts and illusions combined with elements of song and dance".

Oh, and if you're into pop singer Jae, she will be guesting on the show as well.

At times naive but also intelligent, naughty and scary, the character of Philippart is that of a jovial jester-type with a white face, oversized mouth, electric shock hairdo and multi-colour outfits - similar to Batman's The Joker and Michael Keaton's character in Beetlejuice, among others.

Anja, a trained dancer, is the perfect foil for Philippart's magical antics.

The couple are renowned for their "off-beat, totally off-the-wall and outrageously spellbinding illusions".

The show is directed and choreographed by Jared McKenzie and between the two performers they have over 20 years of performing together and they've also clocked up many international awards.

Directed and choreographed by Jared McKenzie, the duo are "constantly in demand as performers as well as consultants to other illusionists".

The couple, who are a familiar feature on both the Los Vegas and Monte Carlo entertainment circuits, have considered making the small principality their home after regular performances for the royal family and various top venues in Monaco.

The show - which runs Wednesdays to Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 5.30pm and 8.30pm Sundays at 3pm - will run from December 1 to January 21. Tickets are R90 weekdays and R120 over weekends and can be booked through Computicket or Sibaya Box-Office on 031-580-5555.

THE GREATEST

The greatest celebrity magician of them all is probably still Harry Houdini, the son of a Hungarian rabbi. His real name was Ehrich Weiss, (1874 - 1926).

The illusionist took his stage name from Robert Houdin and developed a range of stage magic tricks, many of them based on escapology.

Houdini was genuinely highly skilled in techniques such as lockpicking and escaping from straitjackets, but also made full use of the whole range of conjuring techniques, including fake equipment and collusion with individuals in the audience.
