Nothing Shaky about this tribute

Award-winning Elvis Presley impersonator, Shaky Russell, is back in Durban to perform a tribute show to the King in the 30th year of his death.

Russell devised Jailhouse Rock with his late brother, whom he lost just months ago and so is hailing the show as a tribute to both men.

"Elvis was a one of a kind who offered No 1 hits throughout his career," says Russell, whom you may recognise from MWeb ads on TV. "I've put together the story of his life, but not in a theatrical way, I tell it through the music."

Russell says his love of Elvis started at the age of 5 as his father was a big fan of the '50s icon. He entered, and won, talent competitions while at school and then, after qualifying in radio broadcasting, went on a memorable visit to Graceland with his dad.

"I always had a special love for Elvis, but visiting Graceland was absolutely breathtaking," he reminisces.

He has since been performing Elvis tributes around the world, including Elvis's hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, and has even had the chance to record at the legendary Sun Studio home to stars like Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison.

Russell says that Walking in Memphis is not a typical Elvis impersonation show, but rather a tribute performance. It includes everything, from Elvis's love songs to his gospel hits and even some rare numbers for the diehard fans.

"I really want people to go out and appreciate the songs, relive the magic," he says.

"There's something for everyone and it's fantastic from start to end."

- Jailhouse Rock is showing at the iZulu Theatre at Sibaya Casino from June 13 to 24. Performances are from Wednesdays to Sundays at 8pm and tickets are R85. To book call 031-580-5555.
