Until July 15

Brian Boswell's Circus is a familiar sight in Durban during the winter holidays and, as usual, it's packed with good old-fashioned entertainment - the kind of Big Top magic that no glitzy international circus could ever match. And I have that on good authority from the brood of under-12s I took to an evening show last week.

Curled up in their cosy ringside seats, candyfloss in hand, they sat in awe of every performance and made me promise to return during the school holidays.

The animals are an integral part of this circus and are beautifully groomed.

We sat just metres away from magnificent tigers and lions, African elephants, poodles, pythons, ponies and horses, including Arab stallions. The Boswells regard it as a great privilege to work with the animals, which are trained and bred on their farm near Pietermaritzburg, and stress that they are all very well cared for.

On the human side, you're in for some breathtaking acts with the likes of the Zigong Acrobats from China and the Troupe Ulaan Bataar from Mongolia; foot jugglers, Shen Hong and Guo Ling; the Russian Cossack Riders from Moscow and, of course, the clowns, who had us in stitches most of the time.

If you're peckish during interval, there are the usual refreshments on sale, as well as steaming- hot pancakes to warm you up if the weather is chilly. There is safe, enclosed parking. Tickets: a reasonable R40, R60 or R80 (available from 10am at the circus site). Brian's Circus is here until July 15. Showtimes: Tue to Fri 3pm, 7.30pm; Sat 2pm, 5pm, 8pm; Sun: 2pm, 5pm. For more info, call 083-629-7799 (from 10am).
