Art for Paws

Cape Town’s African Tails is gearing up for their much-anticipated annual art auction next week in the Bo-Kaap. This fundraising event seeks to rescue, rehabilitate and sterilising the city’s street cats and dogs.

Curated by Phillippa Duncan, the auction will feature works from top Cape Town artists. They include Nicola Bailey, Cathy Abrahams, Mbulelo Terrence Lakota, Gabrielle Kruger, Michael Chandler, Kate Gottgens and Louise Gelderblom.

This fundraiser is particularly significant given the current state of pet homelessness in South Africa. According to the State of Pet Homelessness Project, about 22% of the country’s 18.6 million dogs and cats are homeless. This includes approximately 4.05 million strays, with 325 000 in shelters and 1.7 million living on the streets.

The urgency of the situation underscores the importance of the organisation’s work, which has been impactful since it was founded in 2006. To date, they have sterilised over 16 500 animals, found homes for more than 2 300 pets, treated nearly 4 000 animals and fed over 13 000 stray dogs and cats.

Co-founder Yael Sacks highlighted that African Tails not only addresses immediate animal welfare needs but also provides essential pet care education in impoverished communities.

The art auction, their largest fundraiser of the year, is a chance for art lovers and animal advocates to support this vital cause while acquiring beautiful pieces. Every cent raised will directly benefit African Tails’ ongoing missions.

Where: The Erik & Claude Foundation in the Bo-Kaap.

When: Thursday, September 19, at 5.30pm.

Cost: Entry is free.

The Annual Variety Gala

This gathering has become a cornerstone event for the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) as it offers a platform for local artists to showcase their talents.

This year’s event promises to be no different, with the charismatic Brandon Phillips returning to the podium to lead the celebration.

In collaboration with the Artscape Theatre Company as well as various arts organisations who regularly perform at the venue, this year’s gala will pay tribute to 30 years of democracy in South Africa, with a particular focus on the contributions of the arts.

The event will not only celebrate the diversity of talent in the country but it will also highlight the enduring role that the arts have played in shaping the nation’s culture over the past three decades.

Attendees can expect an eclectic mix of performances, including operatic renditions by the Cape Town Opera, stunning choreography by the Cape Town City Ballet.

Talents from the Jazzart Dance Theatre as well as Unmute, together with Elvis Sibeko and some thrilling acts by the Zip Zap Circus, will also be featured. They will be joined by the CPO Afri-Arts Choir, alongside local musician, Craig Lucas.

Meanwhile, one of the other highlights of the occasion will be a strength act performed by Oleksii and his new partner Leda. The duo will display their athleticism and artistry. The gala will also feature a brand-new symphonic arrangement of David Kramer's greatest hits, bringing a fresh take on his beloved songs.

The Variety Gala will also serve as a vital fundraising event for the CPO as it supports their ongoing mission to nurture local talent and provide performance opportunities to emerging and established artists.
