A “Dexter” prequel, which is set to delve into how the iconic vigilante became a prolific serial killer, is set to premiere in December.

“Dexter: Original Sin” will feature Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan. He will be joined by a star-studded cast including “Grey's Anatomy” star Patrick Dempsey and Sarah Michelle Gellar from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”.

Christian Slater, Molly Brown, Christina Milian, James Martinez, Reno Wilson and Alex Shimizu round up the cast.

The series will be set in 1991 Miami and will give viewers insight into Morgan’s origins as it focuses on his transformation into a cold-blooded killer that fans have come to know in the hit the Emmy-winning original series, which aired for eight seasons between 2006-2013.

It starred Dexter as a Miami Metro forensics expert, who has homicidal tendencies due to a traumatic childhood where he witnessed his mother being murdered.

The sequel is set to explore Dexter's early years and his twisted moral code developed under the guidance of his adoptive father, Harry Morgan (played by Slater).

Meanwhile, “The OA” star Patrick Gibson will play a younger Dexter while Hall will serve as the narrator, who gives insight into Dexter's internal struggles and thoughts. Brown will play Dexter’s sister, Debra .

Dempsey will feature as Captain Aaron Spencer, the head of the Miami Metro Police Department's homicide division and Gellar will star as Tanya Martin, the CSI Chief.

Meanwhile, there will also be another sequel to the original, “Dexter: Resurrection”. This comes following 2021’s “Dexter: New Blood”, which centred around the serial killer assuming a fake identity and living a quiet life in New York.

However, a series of events makes him fear the revival of his homicidal tendencies.

There are not many details regarding the plot for this new show, especially since Dexter was thought to have died in the season finale.

He could possibly return as a guiding “Dark Passenger” for his son Harrison, a term that is used for his internal lust for blood, stemming from his childhood trauma.

Hall recently expressed his excitement about the upcoming shows with “Entertainment Weekly”.

“The scripts they've executed are fantastic. I can't wait, like as a fan, to watch it, and as an actor, to spend time seeing real footage of things that I've sort of tried to imagine for myself when I imagine what Dexter's early days [were like], now I'm going to have this technicolour version of his memories to refer to.”

“And I think it will help inform my experience of whatever comes next in the other series."

“It’s pretty heady. It’s so gratifying. I’m on the inside to a certain degree and I have a sense of what’s coming but I’m really excited.”

“I’ve spent so much time with this character and to go back and have all the imaginative blanks filled in is going to be great."

“Dexter: Original Sin” is scheduled to premiere in December 2024 while “Dexter: Resurrection” is expected to debut in 2025.

Both will debut on Paramount+, however, it is still unclear on which platform and when it will be available in South Africa.
