Some of South Africa’s top TV shows and movies scooped awards at the inaugural Inclusive Lens Awards.

The award formed part of the 2024 FAME Week Africa festival, which was recently held in Cape Town.

The awards, which was sponsored by Urban Brew, shone a spotlight on the most diverse films and series across Africa for kids programmes, disability and LGBTQIA+ representation.

Local shows “Wyfie” and “Binnelanders” and the movie “iNumber Number: Jozi Gold” were some of the winners.

Wyfie” and “Binnelanders” bagged awards for Best Scripted Series in the LGBTQIA+ category and Disability category, respectively.

“iNumber Number: Jozi Gold” won the award for Best Scripted Feature in the Disability category.

Showmax’s newly released reality show, “Beaulah: Queens van die Kaap”, took home silverware for Best Non-Scripted Series in the LGBTQIA+ category, while “The Radical”, which is produced by Good Work, won Best Non-Scripted Feature in the same category.

FAME Week portfolio director, Martin Hiller said: “The Inclusive Lens Awards were created to honour the incredible storytellers, creators and visionaries who are making waves in the media by ensuring that LGBTGIA+ individuals and people with disabilities are represented.

“We also opened a category for children's content that reflected African narratives and characters so that young people see themselves in their entertainment.”

The award winners were selected by an adjudication panel that included Durban Gay & Lesbian Film Festival director Jason Fiddler, director and producer Karen Jeynes, visual artist and activist Athenkosi Kwinana and multi-award winning filmmaker Dr Shelley Barry, among others.
