The 1995 Source Awards. That was the closest description of the sixth annual South African Hip Hop Awards (SAHHAs), which took place at The Lyric Theatre in Johannesburg last night. Why that comparison?
While no one was accused of being an executive who wants to be “all up in the videos, dancing,” the very long ceremony was capped off by a line that those who were present will remember forever: “Tumi, you ain’t do sh*t for me, bro”.
Ooooooh, burn.

Cassper Nyovest, who scooped six awards on the night, didn’t mince his words after veteran, Tumi Molekane aka Stogie T, namedropped rappers who have come through his studio and whose careers he helped. Mufasa didn’t take kindly to being mentioned.

Of course, Nyovest performed and his Family Tree signee, Gemini Major took home the Producer of the Year award. YoungstaCPT, who opened the show with two songs to a receptive audience rightfully scooped the Lyricist of the Year Award.
And many people’s minds were left boggled when DJ Sliqe’s album, Inja Yam Vol 1, was given the Album of the Year pyramid.
Comedian, Nina Hastie held it down as the host with the most and she was joined by a surprisingly sharp and hilarious Amu as co-host. Staying true to his moniker as The Principal of Mzansi hip hop, he scolded winners about it being corny to mention competitors in acceptance speeches.
Speaking of speeches, in his, Kwesta kept things brief. “I just wanna say one thing and one thing only: thank you.” This is after he was given a standing ovation with several people bowing before his name was even read as a winner.
All in all, the SAHHAs were eventful, extremely well attended and filled with more spice than Colonel Sanders’ kitchen. Will Stogie T respond to Cass? Time will tell. But for now, here is the full list of the winners of the 2017 SAHHAs.
