Essential Illustrated Wildlife Guide to Southern Africa

Edited by David Bristow

(Sunbird Publishers, R299.95)

This is the updated, revised version edited by well-known environmentalist and nature writer David Bristow.

It has more than 600 detailed descriptions and clear colour illustrations of the most common Southern African mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, fish, amphibians and invertebrates you are likely to see.

The information includes distribution maps, size, colour, habitat, and scientific as well as common names, in Afrikaans, Sotho, Tsonga, Shangaan, Xhosa and Zulu.

Each section starts with general information on the species and is colour coded, which makes it easy to use.

There is also a section on the major ecosystems of the Southern African sub regions and which animals you will find in each region.

It is a great book for somebody who is a nature lover in general. I do not need to know the name of every bird I see and this book has more than 200 birds, which is more than enough to keep most people happy.

The book is a nice manageable size and it has a plastic cover to protect it.

It is also available in Afrikaans. – Dianne Low
