Durban – The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sports, Arts and Culture has announced the return of the popular and renowned Harry Gwala Summer Cup horse racing event on Saturday.

The Harry Gwala Summer Cup is an annual horse-riding event second to the Dundee July in stature, and is held at Kilmun horse racing track in Emakhuzeni traditional authority, between Bulwer and Underberg.

The event is organised by the KZN Department of Sports, Arts and Culture in collaboration with the KZN Traditional Horse-Riding Association, as well as the Harry Gwala District and Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma municipalities as part of the wider equine industry development initiative.

The KZN Sports, Arts and Culture spokesperson Nathi Olifant said this was a long awaited equestrian event.

He said the event features no less than eight races of the tripping style.

“Like the Dundee July, it is open to participants from all districts, but not as yet to competitors from outside the province.,” Olifant said.

“This year’s event is expected to draw more spectators as it will be the first one of its kind since the re-opening of the country for major events due to Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns,” he added.

Olifant further explained that the event is designed such that it appeals to people of all ages, as it is not only about horses; “But there will be other activities for all event goers,” he echoed.

“This year’s edition will feature live musical entertainment by both established artists such as Jumbo and Sakhisizwe as well as a host of other local artists.

“A fashion show has also been incorporated as part of the event,” Olifant said.

Olifant urged spectators not to bring or consume alcohol nor bring any kind of weapons including the so-called traditional weapons.
