Durban — Operation Corona soldiers deployed in KwaZulu-Natal recovered goods such as stolen vehicles, drugs and contraband worth more than R7.5 million.
This emerged when Joint Tactical Headquarters KZN said goodbye to Operation Corona soldiers last week.
Captain Anelisiwe Tamela of Joint Operations Tactical Headquarters KZN said an awards presentation was held to honour the dedicated members of the Durban Light Infantry Regiment.
The event not only served to recognise individual and collective accomplishments but also reaffirmed the pivotal role played by the SANDF in safeguarding the safety and security of the nation.
Tamela said soldiers excelled while deployed under Operation Corona.
She said for the past five months, Charlie Company of the Durban Light Infantry Regiment had been entrusted with border protection duties, operating under the auspices of the Joint Tactical Headquarters KZN.
“This esteemed company has diligently patrolled a formidable 260km stretch along the South Africa-Lesotho border. Their operational achievements during this period are impressive, amounting to the seizure of contraband goods, dagga, illegal drugs, and stolen vehicles, collectively valued at over R7.5m,” Tamela said.
The awards ceremony was held at the Merrivale Operational Base and was presided over by the Acting Officer Commanding the Joint Tactical Headquarters KZN, Lieutenant-Colonel MI Ndlovu.
Ndlovu expressed his appreciation for the discipline, professionalism, and commitment demonstrated by the regiment in adhering to military norms and standards, both within the unit and throughout the broader area of operations.
Ndlovu extended his congratulations to the award recipients, acknowledging the significant sacrifices they have made and their commendable performance in enhancing the safety and security of South Africa. He applauded the SANDF personnel deployed along the borders for their relentless efforts, commitment, and dedication.
“I wish to acknowledge the challenging conditions under which you have worked,” Ndlovu said, “yet despite these adversities, you have remained focused, resilient, and committed to fulfilling your mandate.”
He encouraged them to maintain their focus and strength as they approached the final month of their deployment.
