Durban — Two men were arrested by police officers from the Provincial Drug and Firearm Unit in two separate operations, in New Germany and Clermont, over the alleged possession of drugs, guns and ammunition.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said that on Thursday, the officers arrested a 53-year-old man after he was allegedly found in possession of a pistol.
“A further search was conducted at the same premises and resulted in the recovery of a hunting rifle, pistol, 260 rounds of ammunition and seven magazines,” Gwala said.
“The suspect was charged with unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. The recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing.”
Gwala said the suspect was expected to appear before the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
She said the day before, police officers from the same unit conducted an intelligence-driven operation about drugs being sold from premises on 33rd Avenue in Clermont.
Gwala said that a sting operation was put in place and the team pounced on the premises.
“A search was conducted and a 43-year-old suspect was allegedly found in possession of 18 diamond ecstasy tablets, 30 umbrella ecstasy tablets, 55 small pieces of ecstasy and 14 rounds of ammunition,” Gwala said.
She said the suspect was arrested for possession of drugs and unlawful possession of ammunition.
