DURBAN – Metro Police arrested two men for drug possession in the Durban city centre over the weekend.

The men 24 and 25 years old, were arrested on Saville Street on Saturday afternoon.

Metro Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad said the arrests came about after officers were deployed to monitor on Dr Pixley kaSeme Street between Fabian and Mr Price opposite Spar.

He said two officers placed on Saville Street to observe any suspicious activity, noticed suspicious activity happening and more officers were placed around the area.

“Officers noticed two suspicious bravo selling suspected drugs to the homeless people. Officers apprehended two suspects in possession of suspected cocaine. They were taken to Durban Central SAPS to be arrested,” Sewpersad said.

He said one of the men were arrested for being in the possession of suspected heroin and the other was arrested for being in the possession of suspected rock cocaine.

Sewpersad commended the officers for going beyond the call of duty and arresting the suspects.

Meanwhile, last Wednesday night, the Provincial Drug and Firearm Unit carried out an operation in the Point policing area. They were following up on information about a man who was dealing drugs on Fisher Street, said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala.

“The man was spotted and he was approached by police officers. Upon searching him, police found 24 moons of rock cocaine in his possession. The recovered drugs are valued at R36 000,” Gwala said.

She said the 43-year-old man was arrested for possession and dealing drugs. He appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court pending the next court date.
