Durban — Three suspects were expected in court today (Monday) on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, ammunition and impersonating a police officer.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said the charges were being investigated by Umbilo police.
Gwala said that at 3.30pm on Friday, police officers from Umbilo SAPS were conducting patrols on Esther Roberts Road when they spotted three men who were in a vehicle with no rear number plate. The said the vehicle was chased and intercepted on Whelen Road.
“A search was conducted and police found two pistols, 14 rounds of ammunition, two magazines, five cellphones and an appointment certificate,” Gwala said.
“Three suspects aged between 26 and 47 were placed under arrest. The suspects will be profiled to check if they are linked to other cases.”
Gwala said the suspects were expected to appear before the Durban Magistrate’s Court.
According to information received by the Daily News through the Umbilo Community Policing Forum, on searching the occupants and the vehicle the members found the following:
- Two 9mm pistols serial numbers filed off
- 14 live rounds of 9mm ammunition
- Two magazines
- Five cellphones
- One SAPS appointment certificate
