Durban – Three suspects are expected to appear before the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday for multiple robbery cases in the Durban area.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said that on Tuesday at 1pm, officers from the Umbilo Task Team were conducting a stop and search operation on Lena Ahrens Road in Umbilo when they spotted a suspicious vehicle with four male occupants.
“A chase ensued and the suspects’ vehicle collided with a minibus taxi. Three suspects aged between 20 and 36 were arrested. One managed to escape and the other suspect sustained injuries and was taken to hospital under police guard,” Gwala said.
“Police recovered one firearm and housebreaking implements in the suspect’s vehicle. The suspects were positively linked to another robbery case reported in Umbilo.”
Gwala added that the suspects would be profiled to check if they were linked to other robbery cases.
According to a source, the vehicle was a white Ford Ikon.
“On searching the vehicle, members found a 9mm Luger pistol with the serial number filed off, seven live rounds of ammunition, one magazine, one crowbar, one chisel and a pair of gloves,” the source said.
The source said the vehicle’s registration plates came up as false.
The source also said that the vehicle would be checked for further ownership.
“The suspects have been positively linked to a house robbery that took place in Umbilo last week,” the source said.
