DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal police have arrested three friends who were allegedly caught stripping a hijacked minibus taxi in Kwangcolosi, near Pinetown.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the arrests were made after a 43 year old was allegedly hijacked by three armed men wearing balaclavas, who apparently confronted him while he was seated in a minibus taxi on Lancers Road in Berea on October 22 at around 12.40pm.

“The matter was reported to KwaDabeka police and a case of carjacking was opened for investigation,” Mbele said.

She said on Sunday afternoon at around 2pm, the Provincial Vehicle Task Team followed up on information about three men seen in bush, who were in possession of a white Toyota Quantum which fitted the description of the vehicle that was hijacked in Berea.

“They proceeded to Wushwini Road, Kwangcolosi and allegedly caught three suspects in the act of stripping the Toyota Quantum with axes and hammers. They were arrested on the scene and detained at the Hillcrest police station. The police also seized a white Ford bakkie with vehicle parts and registration plates. The vehicle was taken to the pound for further investigation,” Mbele said.

“The suspects aged between 19 and 32 will be profiled to check if they are linked to other cases committed in the province. They will appear in court soon for allegedly being in possession of suspected stolen property and for alleged carjacking.”
