Durban — A man is expected in court soon after he allegedly told his mother that he killed their neighbour in Phoenix, north of Durban.
Police spokesperson, Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed that on Wednesday at Wisecroft Place, a 43-year-old man’s body was discovered.
“Phoenix police arrested a 38-year-old suspect for murder and he will appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court soon,” Ngcobo said.
According to information received by the Daily News from a source, the body was found around midday on Wednesday.
It is alleged that a woman arrived at the detective service centre and told them that while speaking to her son over the phone, she asked him about a neighbour who had not been seen since the weekend.
Her son then told her that he killed the neighbour in his home.
A statement was then taken from the mother, and police and a family member with keys went to the home of the victim.
The source said that when the police entered the house, the officer “noticed bloodied shoe prints on the kitchen tiled floors. He further got a strong smell coming from the lounge consistent with the smell of a decomposing body.”
When the officer investigated further, he found a man’s body on the lounge floor.
“There were multiple injuries to the head and back area, consistent with possible stabbing, and there was considerable dried blood on the floor near the deceased,” the source said.
There appeared to be no signs of forced entry into the premises. The rooms were ransacked, but it was unclear what was taken, apart from a TV and microwave.
It is believed the suspect and victim were friends.
