Durban — Seventeen eThekwini Municipality Sizakala and Human Capital Centres of Excellence have been broken into with assets totalling over R6 million which include computers, hardware and network cables being stolen.
That was according to Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda on Wednesday.
Kaunda said the municipality wanted to register its concern that the city’s efforts to bring information and communication technology closer to communities were being hampered by the increase in incidents of theft at Sizakala and Human Capital Centres of Excellence.
“In the recent months, 17 centres have been broken into with assets totalling over R6 million which include computers, hardware and network cables being stolen,” Kaunda said.
“We strongly condemn these incidents as they frustrate our efforts to provide access to information to residents living in rural and township communities who used long distances to apply for jobs and business opportunities online.”
He said while a comprehensive security plan was being implemented to safeguard these assets, they appealed to members of the community who might have witnessed these incidents to share information with the police so that all those responsible for this criminal act are brought to book.
“As the city, we are saying that all hands must be on deck to accelerate the process of restoration and rebuilding,” Kaunda said.
