Durban - Montclair police are searching for the person who shot and killed a man on South Coast Road in Clairwood, south of Durban, on Wednesday.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said the shooting took place near Seaward Road in Clairwood, where a 35-year-old man was fatally shot in the chest by an unknown suspect.
Gwala said the motive for the killing was unknown.
A case of murder was opened at Montclair police station for investigation.
Clairwood Business Forum spokesperson Juan van Dyk said the area is infested with criminals who are stripping municipal infrastructure and stealing from business and residential properties at night.
“We suspect this might have been a drug user that tried to attack someone or someone who broke into a business premises at that part of the hour and was shot,” he said.
Meanwhile, on Monday, Gwala said a cashier was performing her duties at a supermarket on Himalaya Drive in Shallcross when she was approached by three armed suspects.
“At gunpoint, the suspects demanded money and removed cash from the tills. The suspects also robbed her of cigarettes and cellphones before fleeing the crime scene on foot,” Gwala said.
She said the incident was immediately reported to the police and they responded swiftly.
“The members saw the suspects fleeing the crime scene on foot. A chase ensued during which the suspects opened fire at the police members. As a result, one of the suspects was shot and fell between the shacks. It was later established that he sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the chest,” Gwala said.
“A firearm was also found at the scene,” Gwala said.
