Durban - A young police constable was killed when the state vehicle he was driving and a truck crashed on the N2 in Mtubatuba, northern KwaZulu-Natal.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said that a case of culpable homicide was being investigated by Mtubatuba SAPS.
“It is alleged on May 18, 2022, at 1.25pm, a truck and state vehicle were involved in a collision on the N2 freeway in Mtubatuba at Shikishela area.
“A 27-year-old police constable sustained injuries and was confirmed dead at the scene. The other two police officers were rushed to the hospital for medical attention. The truck driver did not sustain injuries,” she said.
Gwala said the circumstances surrounding the accident were being investigated.
Urgent Lifecare paramedic on scene, Nontobeko Mdletshe said that on arrival, the emergency service found that a truck and SAPS vehicle had collided, leaving three SAPS officers injured.
“Unfortunately, one from the SAPS vehicle sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead on the scene. Two are in critical condition and were treated and transported by Urgent Lifecare to the hospital for further treatment,” Mdletshe said.
Mdletshe said that the officer who was killed was the driver and his colleagues, women, were transported to the hospital.
