Durban — Verulam police are investigating a case of murder after an off-duty security officer was allegedly killed for his firearm in Canelands, north of Durban, on Saturday morning.
Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said that at 8.30am, Verulam police were called to Station Road at Canelands where a 35-year-old man was found with multiple gunshot wounds.
“His pistol was taken during the incident,” Ngcobo said.
“A case of murder was opened at Verulam for further investigation.”
Reaction Unit SA (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram said that the body of an off-duty security officer was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds in an informal area in Canelands.
Balram said that a passer-by made the discovery at 7.57am and contacted Rusa for assistance.
“On arrival, Rusa members discovered that the victim was fatally injured in the shooting. He sustained eight gunshot wounds to his head, chest and both arms,” Balram said.
“An empty gun holster was recovered on him. It has been confirmed that his personal firearm is missing.”
Balram said that the man was dressed in civilian clothing at the time of the incident.
