Durban - The Inkosi Bhambatha (Umzinyathi) region of the ANC is set to convene its elective conference in the coal mining town of Dundee this weekend, thus making it the last region of the governing party in KwaZulu-Natal to do so.
The largely rural region located in the north-western part of the province includes towns like Dundee, Greytown, Nquthu and the politically volatile uMsinga.
Announcing the conference, regional coordinator Bheki Lembethe said Sunday was the last day for branches to convene their biennial branch general meetings (BBGMs) so that they could qualify to take part in the conference to start on Friday at Majuba TVET college - Dundee campus.

“The ANC Inkosi Bhambatha region will host its 8th regional conference from the 21st to the 22nd May 2022. Delegates will be allocated to all qualifying branches in proportion to the membership of each branch. The region has met its 70% threshold to convene the conference.

“The letter serves to inform branches that qualify to participate in the regional conference but have not convened their BBGMs/BGMs that the Sunday of the 15th May 2022 is that last day of convening of BBGMs/BGMs for the purposes of the Regional Conference,” Lembethe wrote to branches.
So far, there are two slates that are being circulated among branches. One of the slates is led by Lucky Moloi, the husband of the MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Bongi Sithole-Moloi.
His slate includes Thami Ngubane, the former mayor of Umvoti (Greytown) Local Municipality and ANC youth league leader, who has been roped in as the deputy chairperson.
Lembethe is set to contest for the position of regional secretary while Patrick Mawila is running for the position of regional treasurer, while Lungi Mabaso is earmarked for the position of deputy regional secretary.
When asked whether he is available to contest for the position, as stated in the slate, Moloi said he does not comment on such matters.
The other slate is led by Ntombi Ngubane, who is set to take on Moloi. Sinethemba Hadebe is set to take on Thami Ngubane while Linda Ngubane is set to take on Mawila.
Lucky Khumalo is set to contest against Lembethe and Siphelele Ngcobo against Lungi Mabaso.
