DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal police have arrested 1 782 suspects during weekly operations.
Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said police were continuing their mandate to clean up the province and ensure that citizens were safe.
“Last week the police arrested 1 782 suspects for various offences such as kidnapping, rape, stock theft, murder, robberies, attempted murder, fraud, theft, shoplifting, malicious damage to property, arson, illegal dealing in liquor, dangerous weapons, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition,” Gwala said.
Police also recovered 95 dangerous weapons, 59 illegal firearms and 785 various rounds of ammunition, she added.
A large quantity of liquor, non-ferrous metal and drugs were also seized during the operations. The suspects appeared at the various courts within the province, where some were remanded in custody whilst other were released on bail.
Last week, police reported that 2 064 suspects had been arrested during similar operations carried out from January 17 to 24.
They were arrested for crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, robbery, fraud, possession of suspected stolen property, theft of motor vehicles, drugs, rape, assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, possession of suspected stolen property and others.
A total of 43 suspects were arrested for murder, 24 for attempted murder, 20 for robbery, 53 for sexual assault and rape, 423 for assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, 95 for theft and burglary, 223 for fraud and shoplifting and 467 for drug-related crimes.
