Durban — The KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission awards – which stems from the Department of Economic Development and Tourism and is also a part of the Simon “Mabhunu” Sabela KZN Film and TV Awards – were held on Saturday.
The awards were initially established in 2013, with the aim of celebrating and recognising excellence within the KwaZulu-Natal film and TV industry.
One of the winners was LX Seth, which won awards for their film, Tokoloshe: The Calling.
They won Best Supporting Actor and Richard Green was chosen as Best Director.
The awards still continue to shine a spotlight on talented South African TV and film practitioners by celebrating their outstanding achievements, with a special focus on KwaZulu-Natal. Among those who were honoured were actors, producers, directors and various film and TV technicians.
Simon “Mabhunu” Sabela, in whose honour the awards are named, was legendary on the big screen and TV.
He was South Africa’s first black film director, who also had a long and successful career which saw him feature in more than 34 movies, nationally and internationally.
The awards were an initiative of the Department of Economic Development Tourism and Environmental Affairs and were implemented by the KZN Film Commission.
