Durban — The eThekwini Municipality had indicated that some areas are experiencing a disruption in refuse collection and street sweeping.

“The city would like to inform residents about a temporary disruption of refuse collection and street sweeping services due to a labour dispute,” the municipality said.

Areas that are affected are uMlazi, Mayville, Berea South, Bellair, South Coast, Chatsworth South, Chatsworth North, and the Bluff.

“Residents are requested to keep their refuse in their properties until advised otherwise by the municipality,” the municipality said.

The municipality apologised for the inconvenience.

For more information, residents can contact the Durban Cleansing and Solid Waste (DSW) helpline on 031 311 8804.

Last month, DSW employees embarked on a go-slow and downed tools at least twice over overtime and payment disputes.

Their main concern was that they were essential workers but were not treated as such. The staff revealed that some DSW workers in other districts were paid more than them, yet they did the same job and sometimes more.

Overtime was also cut by the employer.

Another strike prompted the DA in eThekwini to write to the acting city manager Musa Mbhele to request urgent and decisive action against DSW employees partaking in the ongoing illegal strike.
