Durban — A 10km Peaceful Walk for Change campaign is expected to go ahead in Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.
The campaign is aimed to raise awareness for underprivileged kids in various schools, especially in informal settlements. The campaign is also to mobilise men to act against gender-based violence perpetrators and call men to isolate abusers.
Hundreds of residents are expected to join the peace walk. The Alfred Duma Local Municipality mayor, councillor Zama J Sibisi, will join the awareness walk campaign by the Hope for Africa and Cool Dads group that will be crossing into Ladysmith.
The walk is set to start at the municipality Town Hall.
Sibisi said the message behind the walk has the interest of what the municipality is loudly preaching.
"We need to stand together, care for those who are mostly vulnerable by protecting and improving their lives," Sibisi said.
There is expected to be traffic delays during the duration of the walk. The municipality is asking motorists to be patient.
The Alfred Duma Local Municipality was formed after the redetermination of boundaries in terms of section 21 of the Local Government, the Municipal Demarcation Act 1998 (Act No.27 of 1998) which resulted in municipalities being disestablished and their former areas of jurisdiction merged under new municipalities to be established.
The eMnambithi/Ladysmith Municipality and Indaka Local Municipality are part of the municipalities that have merged to form the new Alfred Duma Local Municipality.
