Durban -  Metro Public Order Police converged on Mary Thipe Road in Cato Manor where they dispersed a crowd of land invaders with rubber bullets and teargas on Wednesday.

The land grabs have been a regular occurrence in the area said Janus Horn of the Manor Gardens/Mayville community policing forum.

Horne said the municipality had demolished six shacks that were being erected on a vacant plot of land.

"Police had warned them to move but the crowd had become unruly and stoned the police from an embankment overlooking the plot of land, " Horne said.

The land grabbers then threw rocks, domestic refuse bags and boulders onto the road. Traffic had to be diverted.

A team from the municipality used a TLB truck to remove some of the debris.

Durban Metro police spokesperson Parboo Sewpersad said service delivery protests had erupted in Cato Ridge, Ntuzuma, N2 in uMgababa, Folweni, Ulundi and Cato Manor.
