Durban — The achievement of good grades in maths during their schooling career benefits pupils as it gives them the edge when they are expected to be at their best academically in Grade 12.

There was an overwhelming response to the Daily News and Stellar Math competition with round 1 completed.

The Daily News Math Whiz of the Year powered by Stellar Math is here and on the hunt for the brightest young minds to take on the challenge. The next round will be written on Thursday 12 September. Each learner will write at their school or the Daily News offices.

The long-term impact of good grades in Maths and English are important for all children. The development and strengthening of maths skills enhances lifelong critical thinking skills and teaches a child to analyse, interpret and assess information from an appropriate objective stance.

The competition kick started with 23 schools and a total of over 1 000 pupils that wrote round 1. The second round now has 83 learners vying for the prestigious title.

The Daily News Math Whiz Competition aims to involve learners in fostering problem-solving skills, time management and mathematical logic.

This healthy competition amongst students aims to build confidence that they can use in their future studies and careers.

The Stellar Math Centre is in Sunningdale, near uMhlanga, La Lucia, Sunningdale, Durban North and Phoenix. Their objectives are to aid and develop each pupil to a mastery level, to give them confidence and sound skills throughout their schooling careers and to enable them to do well in Grades 11 and 12 as they prepare for life after school.

Sinethemba Hlela, Marketing and Brand Officer of the Daily News said the newspaper was incredibly proud to be a community paper that not only informed but also invested in the future of young minds.

“This Maths Competition is an exciting opportunity to inspire and empower Grade 6 learners, helping them unlock their full potential through fun and challenging rounds. We look forward to seeing these bright young talents showcase their skills, and we’re thrilled to be part of this initiative, which nurtures the problem-solvers and leaders of tomorrow.”

These are the learners who have made it to Round Two of the competition. They achieved 70% and above in Round One.
