Cape Town - Carting action is well under way in the Bo-Kaap as the Red Bull Box Cart Race saw participants barrelling down the iconic streets of the neighbourhood.
The bold, the daring and the bananas are braving the slope-like track in the Bo Kaap in the wackiest non-motorised rides for the world-famous Red Bull Box Cart Race. About 57 teams will have to navigate the 594 metre steep road.
The jam-packed event kicked off just after 11am, as crowds gasped and cheered when box carts made their way through obstacles.
The judges will assess the teams according to creative design, team spirit, the entertainment performance element that takes place in the start of the race and the ability of getting the cart across the finish line with speed and flair.
Mayco member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said: "Bo-Kaap holds a special place in the history of this city as one of the oldest residential neighbourhoods in Cape Town. With its beautiful, colourful houses, great views of Signal Hill and sloping roads, it is the perfect location for the Red Bull Box Cart Race.
"We are looking forward to seeing thousands of spectators line up along the roads in the Bo-Kaap for this incredible fun race. Hosting these two events this week is a wonderful precursor for what will be a spectacular summer of events in Cape Town," said Smith.
