Cape Town - The Red Bull Box Cart Race judges will have their hands full as they judge participating teams according to creative design, team spirit, entertainment, performance and ability to get the cart across the finish line with speed and flair.
The race challenges teams of drivers to create a uniquely designed non-motorised cart and race it on intricate slopes in an attempt to get it across the finish line in the fastest time.
In 2000, Red Bull in Belgium kicked off this amusing competition in Brussels, where drivers of all levels were challenged to put their creativity and need for speed to the test.
Since then more than 120 Red Bull Box Cart race events have taken place, with more than 4 million spectators from all parts of the world coming together to enjoy the festivities.
In 2004, South Africa hosted its first cart race in Durban where team Flower Power successfully raced away with the title.
Since then the country has seen a lot of wacky and wild race moments, including in the streets of Soweto.
In 2018, more than 80 teams showcased their flair and ability to create and race a quick-moving cart across the tricky slopes of Sandton, Johannesburg.
Now in its ninth edition in Mzansi, the race will see more than 50 teams participate in this global non-motorised race in the Bo-Kaap in Cape Town with the hopes of taking the baton from 2018 defending team champions, Bobsled.
The likes of Potjie Boytjies, Raging Bulls, Date Night Team and Brass Monkeys are among 31 teams that will be representing the Mother City in the competition. The judges – including Red Bull MotorSport rally driver Giniel de Villiers, as well as Friends Of Red Bull Skarra Ntubeni, Courtnaé Paul, and rapper Nasty C – will not only be looking for speed, but creative elements in the carts.
The Red Bull Box Cart Race takes place on Sunday in the Bo-Kaap, hosted by comedian Dalin Oliver alongside content producer Nadia Jaftha and commentary by Brian Emminis.
