Cape Town - Cape Town police have added a case of murder after one of five men who were shot and wounded in Khayelitsha died on Wednesday.

The corners of Cosa and Dika streets in Site B turned into a bloody scene on September 28 at about 7.30pm after unknown gunmen opened fire on them.

Five people between the ages of 21 and 38 were wounded and rushed in private vehicles to a nearby hospital.

Police spokesperson FC van Wyk on Thursday said one of the victims, a 23-year-old man, died in hospital due to injuries sustained.

He said the case will be changed to murder and attempted murder.

“According to reports, the victims were transferred to a nearby medical facility for treatment by private vehicles. The five victims sustained gunshot wounds, and there were also two victims that were injured whilst running away for cover. The unknown suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,” said van Wyk.

While the motive for the shooting incident is unknown, there is speculation that it might be gang-related.

Khayelitsha police have initiated a 72-hour activation plan to get to the bottom of an incident.

The Khayelitsha Development Forum described Tuesday’s shooting as a setback as the community has not experienced mass shootings in the past months.

Twenty-six people have died in mass killings in the area since March.
