CAPE TOWN - Cape Town residents have been advised to make alternative travel arrangements as most taxis are expected to be off the roads on Thursday.
The Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (Cata) and Congress for Democratic Taxi Associations (Codeta) are set to march to Premier Alan Winde’s office to hand over a memorandum of grievances including the impoundment of taxis.
The associations’ women’s desk recently handed over a memorandum to the premier’s office.
Cata secretary Mandla Hermanus said 2 000 taxi operators were expected to participate in the march.
“There is a strike tomorrow by associations affiliated to Cata and Codeta. They are marching to the office of the premier to present a set of grievances regarding the impoundment of taxis, unfair requirements for releasing impounded vehicles and other issues affecting the taxi industry. The march will commence at 10.30am from District Six,” said Hermanus.
South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) spokesperson Gershon Geyer said Cata and Codeta gave Santaco the assurance that there would be no interference and intimidation of the other regions that would be operating as normal.
“Cata and Codeta had planned a joint march to the office of the premier to present a memorandum containing a set of grievances that they have as the industry, especially those operating in the townships. They had applied for a permission to march and they had been granted the certificate and as such they will proceed with a peaceful march tomorrow.
“They also made a decision that none of their vehicles will be operating tomorrow. All other transport services will continue as per normal,” said Geyer.
