On December 17, 500 families I was asked to select each received a bag of potatoes and a bag of groceries donated by Chinatown.

The recipients were from Ottery, Parkwood, Hanover Park, Lotus River and informal settlements.

The CEO of Chinatown, Shuwing Liou, kindly hosted the event as he has done for a number of years.

During the festive season there are people who cannot be festive due to financial constraints, and this gesture is a motivation to those who can to open their hearts and hands.

On December 18, we held the 13th Ottery Boyz MCC Christmas convoy. A massive convoy of motorbike clubs, playing Christmas carols loudly, left my home in Ottery. Our bakkies were filled with children’s books, toys, chips, biscuits, sweets and clothing.

We donated to 1 500 children in Ottery, Philippi, Lotus River, Wetton and Lansdowne, which included three informal settlements.

One of the highlights was a church we visited in Ottery, where we gave the surprised children toys and chips.

We also donated a huge container of learner goods, books, games and toys to a crèche in Ottery. We gave two soccer balls to children in Philippi who play the sport with home-made balls they make from recycled goods. Both events cheered up the recipients in the spirit of our festive season.
