Cape Town - Approximately 60 teams are set compete in the exciting 2022 Red Bull Box Cart Race in Cape Town on Sunday and will be racing down the colourful streets of the Bo-Kaap in their creative non-motorised vehicles to win the coveted title of Red Bull Box Cart champion.
Potjie Boytjies, Raging Bulls, Date Night Team and Brass Monkeys are among the 31 teams representing the Mother City in the exciting competition to race down the Bo-Kaap slope faster than the rest.
Other participating teams include Morning Glory, Team Dala What You Must!, Bo-Kaap Bokke and many more.
Earlier this year, Red Bull put out a call-to-action and people had to go onto the Red Bull website where they played a quick online game.
At the end of the game there was an application form where entrants could fill in their details and submit video entries to participate in the iconic race.
Alex Strachan from team Date Night said their speedy date night box cart called “Quickie” has been made with love, sweat and tears. Strachan said they were excited to dazzle the crowded Bo-Kaap streets with their romantic antics.
“With all the excitement we will try not to finish too quickly and are looking forward to competing this weekend,” he said.
Stephen Walker from Cape Town-based team Potjie Boytjies said: “We’re so excited to be a part of the Red Bull box cart event and even just to work with Red Bull. Our team has been working really hard on our performance and we can’t wait to put on a show for everyone!”
The Red Bull Box Cart Race is a 22-year-old event that has seen more than 120 races across the world. The last race was held in 2018 in Johannesburg but it will now be taking place in Cape Town surrounded by the iconic and colourful Bo-Kaap neighbourhood on Sunday, November 6.
The race will be hosted by comedian Dalin Oliver and award-winning content producer Nadia Jaftha with commentary by airshow commentator Brian Emminis.
The race will be judged by Red Bull MotorSport Athlete Giniel de Villiers, Red Bull FORBs – Skarra Ntubeni, Courtnaé Paul and Nasty C, among others – who will be looking for speed as well as creative elements in the carts.
