Cape Town - The plotting between an Elsies River mom and alleged underworld kingpin Nafiz Modack was laid bare in the Western Cape High Court as police detailed cellphone evidence.
The activities of Amaal Jantjies ahead of the grenade attack at the Bishop Lavis home of slain Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) detective Charl Kinnear were outlined by the Hawks’ National Task Team as the underworld trial continued yesterday.
Captain Trevor Shaw testifed that he traced the activities of Jantjies in the weeks leading up to her arrest.
Jantjies, along with her boyfriend, Janick Adonis, was busted after a gang member known as “Mamokie” was caught outside Kinnear’s home with a hand grenade in his possession. Mamokie turned to oust Jantjies. The notorious Cape Flats couple were thrust into the spotlight after it was revealed that they had sought help from AGU boss Major-General Andre Lincoln to help secure bail for Adonis, who was in Malmesbury Prison.
Using WhatsApp chats and her Capitec bank account, police discovered that during November 2019, Jantjies received R64 000 from the Empire Investments bank account.
According to the State, the account was suspected of having been used to fund various criminal activities, such as paying for the pinging of Kinnear’s phone.
In his testimony, Shaw handed over seven files of all the chats found on Jantjies’s phones. He said that on November 9, 2019, the mother of two obtained a new cellphone and the next day she received a message from a number saved as “MR N M”.
Shaw showed the court that the person asked Jantjies whether she had obtained the information he required.
It is understood that Jantjies was sent to try to corrupt former AGU officer Sergeant Ashleh Tabisher into providing information about when the police would raid Modack’s homes.
Shaw explained that in tracking the movements of Jantjies prior to the grenade attack, police found CCTV footage at Shell garage, where she was seen with Modack’s alleged middleman and co-accused, Ziyaad Poole.
Jantjies is captured receiving an envelope and while the State contends it was cash, Poole’s lawyer said his client only handed over an envelope.
