Cape Town - The community of Hawston, near Hermanus, is in disbelief after the body of a missing fisherman was found, a week after his disappearance.
The lifeless body of Marvin Dreyer, 38, was discovered just after 10am on Saturday in the lagoon near Fisherhaven.
Dreyer was last seen leaving a local pub on July 6 when a friend who walked with him turned around, leaving Dreyer to walk alone on a dark road.
His sister, Tracy Hendricks, said yesterday that a local who was out strolling on the beach came across his body.
She said the discovery was made minutes before residents were to conduct another search for Dreyer.
“While we were there, one of the women in the crowd got a call and she said somebody from the lagoon was called and said a body was found,” she said.
“When I got there, there were lots of people on the scene. I asked if it was possible if I could see the body, the body wasn’t in the water, it was on the sand.”
Hendricks said there were unanswered questions regarding her brother’s death.
“His best friend came to me and said they were at the exact spot yesterday and nobody was here.
“Even if he was under the influence, it is very unlikely that he would walk in the opposite direction.
“It doesn’t make sense. I can’t say that it looks not what it seems until I get the autopsy,” she explained.
Tributes have since been pouring in for Dreyer on Facebook, who was described as a fun and genuine person.
Faith and Hope Missing Persons Unit founder Benji Williams has called on anyone with information to come forward.
“If anyone has information who was with him that night, come forward. This is also an eye-opener for the runaways who don't inform people where they are going to,” Williams said.
